What does this qualification cover?

This professional development qualification provides essential knowledge and skills to anyone wanting to actively support individuals with learning disabilities. Units include: the meaning of learning disability, support, legislation, communication and planning.

Who is it suitable for?

The Award is suitable for people who come into contact with individuals with learning disabilities as part of their job. This could include people in community and volunteering roles or working in education, leisure and employment support.

What are the entry requirements?

You should be at least 16 years old. We do not set any other entry requirements but colleges or training providers may have their own guidelines.

How many credits are required to complete it?

The Award requires 12 credits.

How is it assessed?

It will be assessed by your Tutor or Assessor using a range of methods. This could include direct observation in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task.

Do you need to be working to take this qualification?

Yes, you will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills.

How long does it take to complete?

You can usually complete the Award in 6 months.

What related qualifications can you progress to?

The Award provides a direct progression route to Level 2 & 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care as they share a number of units or the Level 3 Award and Certificate in Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities.

This qualification does not qualify you to work but will support you in your current job role or future job roles when supporting children, young people or adults with learning disabilities.

Students will still need to prepare a portfolio of evidence. We encourage centres to review our guidance on the types of evidence, and evidence capture, that we permit including e.g. the use of video, photos and other digital means of demonstrating knowledge.

Students are still required to complete the work placement, but the focus should be on learning outcomes and evidencing competence. We have removed the requirement for students to complete a minimum number of placement hours; although hours should still be recorded.

This qualification has shared units/content across other Awarding Organisations which have been agreed by the relevant sector bodies therefore it has not been possible to reduce the required Rule of Combination (or to remove any further learning outcomes/assessment criteria) as any changes in this area would largely impact on the integrity and purpose of the qualification.

The adaptation addendum document contains further information of how learning outcome / evidence of competence needs to be met either within the workplace or via alternative assessment methods. Adaptations should also be applied in line with the ‘HSC, Early Years and Childcare - Joint AO Adaptation Guidance 2021’ document.
