What does the qualification cover?
This qualification covers the employment rights and responsibilities and personal learning and thinking skills needed to support learners with successful careers in the healthcare sector. It contains units which include teamwork, managing own workload and problem solving.
Alongside Functional Skills, this qualification also forms part of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Health (Healthcare Support Services) framework.
Who is it suitable for?
It is anticipated that learners taking this qualification will do so as part of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Health (Healthcare Support Services) framework.
What are the entry requirements?
You should be at least 16 years old. We do not set any other entry requirements but colleges or training providers may have their own guidelines.
How many credits are required to complete it?
The Award requires 7 credits.
How is it assessed?
It will be assessed by your tutor or assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments.
Do you need to be working to take the qualification?
Yes, learners will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement as they will need to show competence in both knowledge and skill.
How long does it take to complete?
This qualification can usually be completed in six months.
What type of job roles can you apply for on completion?
This will enable learners to progress to a variety of job roles in Healthcare Support Services.

Internal assessments will go ahead in 2021/22, therefore moving away from results being based on Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs) used in 2020 to 2021, where this has been permitted. Students need to prepare a portfolio of evidence. We encourage centres to review our guidance on the types of evidence, and evidence capture, that we permit including e.g. the use of video, photos and other digital means of demonstrating knowledge and skills.
Students are still required to complete the work placement, but the focus should be on learning outcomes and evidencing competence.
The adaptation addendum document contains further information of how learning outcome / evidence of competence needs to be met either within the workplace or via alternative assessment methods. Adaptations should also be applied in line with the ‘HSC, Early Years and Childcare - Joint AO Adaptation Guidance’ document which can be found below.
