Our Enquiries about Results and Assessment Decisions Policy provides guidance for centres to complete this process.

Enquiries about Results (EARs)

An Enquiry about Results allows for Centres to raise a query over a result for an external assessment marked by NCFE.

Centres must have authorisation from the learner(s) for any enquiry, and Centres must retain written learner authorisation for at least 6 months following the outcome of an enquiry. NCFE reserve the right to request and inspect such evidence.

All requests must include a Learner Details Form, indicating learner(s), qualification description & code, batch numbers, and confirmation of authorisation.

Option 1 – Clerical Check

  • NCFE will complete a full check of all clerical procedures to ensure that the marks or grades awarded to the learner(s) have been correctly recorded and processed.
  • A Clerical Check includes ensuring all parts of the assessment have been marked, all marks have been recorded and added up correctly, and grade boundaries have been applied accurately.
  • A Clerical Check request must be submitted within 20 working days from receipt of the external assessment results.

Option 2 – Review of Marking

  • NCFE will have a senior examiner carry out a full review of the learner’s assessment to ensure that the agreed mark scheme / standard has been applied correctly.
  • A Review of Marking includes a Clerical Check.
  • This will not involve the re-marking of the learner’s assessment unless errors are identified.
  • A Review of Marking request must be submitted online within 20 working days from receipt of the initial external assessment results.
  • If a Clerical Check has previously been requested, a Review of Marking request must be made within 5 working days of receiving the result of the Clerical Check.
  • A review of marking is not available for Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) assessments.
  • If you have concerns about the marking of a whole cohort, please submit an Enquiry about Results for all learners that you believe may be affected.

What Happens Next?

Enquiry acceptance – the decision of whether or not to accept the enquiry application will be considered and communicated within 5 working day from receipt.

Clerical Check – we aim to complete an accepted clerical check within 5 working days from the enquiry submission

Review of Marking – we aim to complete an accepted review of marking within 25 working days of the enquiry submission.

If you believe you may not receive the outcome of an Enquiry about Results before the entry or assessment date of the next available external assessment opportunity, please notify us at the point of submitting the enquiry using the additional information box below.

Please note that in some cases, particularly where the enquiry may be complex, the enquiry may take longer than our published timescales. In such instances, we will advise you of the revised timescales and the reason(s) why.

Enquiry outcome – the outcome of an enquiry will be sent within 5 working days of the decision being made, in line with the timescales above. An email will be sent to the Centre contact who made the original request.

Learner marks and grades can go up, stay the same, or may also go down.

Fees (from Sept 2019)

  1. Clerical check (per batch) - £5*
  2. Review of marking with report (per learner) - £45*

*Fee waived if the overall external assessment grade changes

Enquiries about Assessment Decisions

An enquiry about an internally marked assessment allows the opportunity for checks to be made on whether the assessment criteria were fairly, reliably and consistently applied during the External Quality Assurance process.

NCFE Awarding - review of external quality assurance decisions.

  • This is a full review of learner assessments sampled during the External Quality Assurance process which would be carried out to ensure the correct assessment criteria were fairly, reliably and consistently applied during the External Quality Assurance process.
  • The process of review will not involve a reassessment of an internally marked assessment, unless errors are identified.
  • This review is only available after internal enquiries and appeals procedures have been exhausted.
  • It is not available if the original assessment decisions of the Internal Quality Assurer were accepted by an External Quality Assurer without any adjustments, or for individual learners.

NCFE Apprenticeship Services – review of end point assessment decisions.

  • This is a full review of learner assessments carried out by us to ensure the correct assessment criteria were fairly, reliably and consistently applied during the External Quality Assurance process.
  • This will not involve a reassessment of an end point assessment, unless errors are identified.

What Happens Next?

  • Enquiries about assessment decisions must be made within 20 working days of receipt of the initial decision.
  • We aim to complete and enquiry about assessments within 25 working days from the enquiry acceptance.

Enquiry outcome

How do I submit an enquiry?

  1. Download and complete the Learner Details Form.
  2. Complete and submit the web form below within the timescales set out, making sure you attach the Learner Detail Form to your submission.

Please note: ‘working days’ refer to days which are not weekends, bank holidays, or days the NCFE office is otherwise closed. Late requests resulting from school holidays, staff absences, or other planned closures will not be accepted.
